Background:

I enjoy organizing business networking events and thought this would be a fun event to do especially while we still have nice weather before the summer ends. I’ve taken the NY Waterway ferry to/from Manhattan and it’s a really great ride, especially at sundown. The views of Manhattan are unbelievable and it’s such a refreshing experience to be in the middle of the wind and water. I was looking to collaborate with someone in the NJ/NYC area to get this idea going, but so far, I hadn’t connected with the right person…

…until, a few weeks ago, when I read an Associated Press article about David Mathison and how he sold 5,000 copies of his book Be The Media solely through his contacts on Twitter and Facebook.  I looked him up and saw he was from the NYC/LI area, so I contacted him and asked if he would be interested in the idea of a Social Media Cruise around Manhattan. He really liked the idea, which I’m glad because I have a ton of questions to ask him about his book! (Full disclosure: I’m not affiliated with David or Be The Media nor receiving any form of compensation. I’m just a fan, applying Social Media best practices).

This is a 90 minute cruise on the NY Waterways Twilight cruise, which is open to the public.

We’ll meet at 7:15pm at Pier 78 NY Waterways ferry terminal, inside in the seated waiting area. If it rains, we’ll look at an alternative indoor venue (If you have any recommendations, we’re open to suggestions on a backup place; please leave a comment below with ideas).

We’ll depart from Pier 78 at 38th St & 12th Ave at 7:30pm, then cruise on the Hudson River around lower Manhattan to the Brooklyn Bridge, then will circle back around again back to where we started. There’s an upper and lower deck on the ferry and the tour will be narrated, but we can have our own conversations amongst ourselves as well.

The ticket prices are $26 per adults (children ages 12 and under are $15 each).  Purchase tickets directly at NY Waterway Ticket Counter at Pier 78 NYC on the day of event (or in advance at any NY Waterway Terminal or via their website: www.NYWaterway.com )

Food concession and rest rooms are available in the ferry terminal; you can also purchase chips, sandwich wraps, beverages, beer & wine on-board the boat as well (starting at $5-$7 and up). There are free NY Waterways buses going to/from downtown & midtown, which run along the city bus lines (see www.nywaterway.com for times/routes). Also, there’s a free ferry transfer from New Jersey Weehawken terminal to NYC terminal.

Bring a name tag and business cards. We encourage business networking and topics for discussion about social media/social networking. Note: There is no wi-fi available on the boat.
